Andrew’s Story:Advantage Rehab Solutions helps young father walk again

October 25, 2015

andrew allgood outside 3Andrew Allgood was 26 years old when the motorcycle he was driving was struck by a car on the freeway. The result was a traumatic brain injury that left him in a deep coma in addition to multiple site fractures to his upper and lower body.

As a resident, Andrew was fortunate to begin therapy with the Advantage Rehab Solutions team. The rehab team felt he had more potential and needed further intervention to give him a chance to recover at least some functional independence.

The team were able to set new mobility goals by utilizing the Second Step Gait Harness System II (GHSII)  to improve Andrew’s gait pattern and quality.

Andrew can now use the GHSII to walk in the community on a daily basis with supervision.  He recalls his biggest rehab accomplishment as “being able to walk using the gait trainer independently in the sun.”

Mayo Clinic: Simple tips to prevent falls

October 4, 2015

RobertFalls are a leading cause of injury hospitalizations and emergency room visits nationwide, and the leading cause of death for those over the age of 65. However, fear of falling doesn’t need to rule your life.

To reduce risk of falls, individuals are encouraged to:

Exercise regularly – focus on leg strength, weight bearing exercises, and improving balance. Physical activity can go a long way toward fall prevention. With your doctor’s OK, consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review medicines, both prescription and over-the-counter, to identify medicines that may cause side effects or interactions such as dizziness or drowsiness.

Have vision checked at least annually by an eye doctor and update eye glasses as needed.

Make homes safer by reducing tripping hazards such as area rugs, adding grab bars inside and outside the shower or tub and next to the toilet, adding railings on both sides of stairways and improving your home’s lighting.
