November 15, 2015

AOL andrew 3

National Family Caregivers Month is observed every November to draw attention to the many challenges facing family caregivers, advocate for stronger public policy to address family caregiving issues, and raise awareness about community programs that support family caregivers. It’s a time to thank, support, educate, empower and celebrate.

Each year, more and more Americans are caring for a loved one with a chronic condition, disability, or the frailties of old age.  There are as many as 90 million family caregivers in the U.S. today.
Most adults would prefer to age in place 90% of adults over the age of 65 would prefer to stay in their current home as they age.  Family, friends, and neighbors provide 80% of the care for the elderly.

Two out of every 5 adults are family caregivers.  39% of all adult Americans are caring for a loved one who is sick or disabled.

The woman who can smell Parkinson’s Disease

November 8, 2015

A Scottish woman’s super sense of smell could change the way Parkinson’s disease is diagnosed.

Joy Milne’s husband, Les, died in June, aged 65. He worked as a consultant anaesthetist before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 45. She says: “His smell changed and it seemed difficult to describe. It wasn’t all of a sudden. It was very subtle – a musky smell.”

Edinburgh University decided to test her – and she was very accurate. Her job was to smell a T-shirt worn by each subject, then tell researchers who had Parkinson’s and who didn’t. Her accuracy was 12 out of 12.

Researchers hope to find the molecular signature responsible for the odor and then develop a simple test such as wiping a person’s forehead with a swab. Researchers say that a diagnostic test like this could cut through current diagnosing difficulty, enable people to go in and see a consultant, have a simple swab test and come out with a clear diagnosis of Parkinson’s, enabling earlier treatment options.
