Re-hospitalization rates for traumatic brain injury higher than previously reported

A new study shows that rates of hospital readmission following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) are greater than other chronic diseases and injuries and are higher than previously reported.

The study examined nearly 30,000 TBI patients discharged from Ontario hospitals over the span of eight years. Published in the May edition of Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the study found that about 36 per cent of patients with TBI had been re-hospitalized within three years of their initial injury due to a variety of factors.

The study found that being male, of older age, and more co existing were significant predictors of re-hospitalization for TBI patients. Consistent with previous reports, TBI patients discharged with were found to have a higher rate of readmission than others.

Did Henry VII suffer from Traumatic Brain Injuries?

Henry VIII may have suffered repeated traumatic brain injuries similar to those experienced by football players and others who receive repeated blows to the head, according to research by a Yale University expert in cognitive neurology.

The transformation of Henry VIII from an affable youth to a ruthless and tyrannical man has invited many often unsatisfactory explanations.

Henry suffered two major head injuries during his 30s. Researcher findings confirm conjecture by some historians that jousting injuries caused later health and behavioral problems.

Traumatic brain injury explains the memory problems, explosive anger, inability to control impulses, headaches, insomnia — and maybe even impotence — that afflicted Henry during the decade before his death in 1547, according to a paper published in the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience on Feb. 5

Women and brain injury-what you need to know

Men are more likely to acquire a brain injury than women, and are three-times more likely to die from a brain injury. Perhaps because of this, the media tends to pay more attention to men and brain injury.
