Harvard Researchers Have Found the Source of Human Consciousness

May 30, 2017

For the first time, neuroscientists have found a connection between the cortex and its outermost layer, according to Michael D. Fox, MD, PhD, a researcher on this study.  To conduct the study, Fox and colleagues recruited 36 patients with brainstem lesions. 12 of these were in a coma and the remaining 24 conscious.

Those subjects who were unconscious showed damage to a small area of the brainstem known as the rostral dorsolateral pontine tegmentum. “When it is damaged, almost every patient became comatose,” Fox said.

Fox and colleagues believe that someday we may better understand those who are in a coma or a vegetative state, and may even find novel treatment options to help those patients “wake up.”

Scientists can sniff out 17 diseases from a single breath sample

May 28, 2017

When you exhale you breathe out a bunch of different things – mainly nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen – but there are also more than 100 types of volatile chemical components that come along.

Researchers found each of the 17 diseases that they searched were produced a different ‘breathprint’ – a different amount and combination of 13 different VOCs – that could allow them to accurately pinpoint if a participant had one of these disease or not:

  • lung cancer
  • colorectal cancer
  • head and neck cancer
  • ovarian cancer
  • bladder cancer
  • prostate cancer
  • kidney cancer
  • gastric cancer
  • Crohn’s disease
  • ulcerative colitis
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • idiopathic Parkinson’s
  • atypical Parkinsonism
  • multiple sclerosis
  • pulmonary arterial hypertension
  • pre-eclampsia
  • chronic kidney disease.

5 ways we kill our brain cells

May 25, 2017

Although the brain can produce new brain cells, there are many ways we kill them.

Contrary to popular belief, we don’t have a limited supply of brain cells. Sure, the majority of them grow early in life, but some areas of the brain continue to grow them into adulthood and beyond — a process called neurogenesis.

The hippocampus is one of these areas, and it’s also among the most important areas of the brain, playing roles in memory, emotion, and learning. But as we grow older, a number of factors compete with neurogenesis and kill brain cells.  They’re a little more common than you might expect. Here are five of them: Read article

UCLA Scientists “Jump-start” the Brain of a Coma Patient

May 23, 2017

A new ultrasound treatment by UCLA scientists was used to restart brain activity in a 25-year-old man recovering from a coma. Before the treatment, the man showed few signs of consciousness and understanding speech, able to perform very limited movements.

Three days after the treatment, the man could fully understand language, communicated by nodding his head and even fist-bumped one of the doctors.

“The changes were remarkable,” said Martin Monti, the study’s lead author and a UCLA associate professor of psychology and neurosurgery.

With help, the brain may be able to heal itself

May 21, 2017

Through treating everything from strokes to car accident traumas, neurosurgeon Jocelyne Bloch knows the brain’s inability to repair itself all too well. But now, she suggests, she and her colleagues may have found the key to neural repair: Doublecortin-positive cells.

Similar to stem cells, they are extremely adaptable and, when extracted from a brain, cultured and then re-injected in a lesioned area of the same brain, they can help repair and rebuild it. “With a little help,” Bloch says, “the brain may be able to help itself.” Read article

What happens to your brain when you stop exercising?

May 14, 2017

In past neurological studies, when sedentary people began an exercise program, they soon developed augmented blood flow to their brains, even when they were resting and not running or otherwise moving.

More recent work has shown that seniors benefit greatly from regular cardiovascular exercise. Increased structural volume in the hippocampus translates as an improvement in episodic memory performance.

What if you stopped exercising for ten months? Ten years? Researchers speculate that cognitive functioning, especially as it relates to an ability to form and retrieve memories, would be negatively affected.

Current government guidelines suggest either 150 minutes of moderate aerobic intensity or 75 minutes of high aerobic intensity every week. It is also suggested that these minutes are spread out through the week, daily exercise being optimal.

Exercise is particularly important for brain health because it appears to ramp up blood flow through the skull not only during the actual activity, but throughout the rest of the day. Read full article
